Great Piano Performances
A Review of the 2007-2008 Season
Great piano music returns for the new season at the Franco-American Heritage Center!
The 2007-2008 Piano Series will present keyboard artists of national and international renown and introduce gifted young pianists. This season, thanks to a generous donation to the Center, middle school and high school students will be admitted free of charge to all Piano Series concerts.
Duncan Cumming returns with his former teacher, Frank Glazer, to open this season on Saturday, September 29, in a program featuring works for one piano, four hands.
This season will also present promising young artists. Justine Pelletier, from Montreal, winner of the piano competition at Canada’s 2007 National Music Festival, will make her Lewiston debut November 17. Will Bristol, 15, made his solo recital debut here last December. This spring, he won the Junior category at the Pine Tree Piano Competition, and first prize in the Mildred Freiberg Middle School Competition of the New England Piano Teachers Association. He returns to the FAHC January 5, 2008.
Piano artist and educator George Sebastian Lopez selected our Steinway Model D concert grand piano at the factory in early 2006, and has appeared here in solo recital, given master classes, and performed with the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra. He returns for an educational presentation and solo recital the weekend of February 15 and 16, 2008.
Following the recital of Chiharu Naruse here last December, Christopher Hyde’s Press Herald review called her “a world-class artist who would grace any concert stage.” She returns to our stage March 8.
Tamara Poddubnaya, pianist and master teacher from St. Petersburg, Russia, returns on May 3, accompanied by her student, Evgeni Genchev, an 18-year-old “rising star” from Bulgaria, winner of this year’s prestigious Valery Gavrilin piano competition in Russia and first prize recipient in the piano competition this July at the LISMA Festival at SUNY-Old Westbury. Together with his teacher, Evgeni has already made two private visits to the FAHC and eagerly anticipates his public debut in our hall.
On June 14, our guest artist, acclaimed by audiences in this country and in Europe, will be Anastasia Antonacos, a member of the music faculty at the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College.
The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra season will feature two programs with piano soloists, beginning with the Opening Night Gala Concert, Saturday, October 27, when Frank Glazer will perform Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto.
